Humanities History - Course Policies (2019 – 2020)
Following a tradition that dates back at least to the Middle Ages, Humanities uses a combination of lectures and seminars. The history seminar provides an opportunity to discuss readings, clarify their meaning, connect them to lectures, and explore their significance for the past and the present. In order to participate effectively, you must keep up with the reading assignments and pay close attention to lectures. Come to seminar prepared to discuss what you have read and heard. Please also follow current events; the study of the past is much more interesting and meaningful if you know what is happening in the world today.
This is an interdisciplinary class and I encourage you to bring questions and ideas from literature, art and music to history seminar.
Assessment: On your report card you will receive one Humanities Social Studies (1st Hour) grade that will incorporate history, art and music assessments. Your literature grade will be listed separately as your Humanities English grade. You will be able to keep track of all grades using PowerSchool.
The 1st hour Humanities Social Studies grade is calculated according to the following formula:
History (60%) + Art (20%) + Music (20%) = Humanities Social Studies (1st Hour) grade. The history part of your grade will be based on your work on quizzes, tests, essays, homework and class participation in history seminar. The grading scale is at the end of the syllabus. See separate Art and Music policies for those parts of the grade.
Class Participation: Class participation grade will be 20% of your history grade and will be based on the following:
- bringing the appropriate reading material to seminar;
- bringing reading notes to seminar in your Seminar Notebook
(notebooks may be collected occasionally, with warning);
- answering Moodle make-up questions when you are absent;
- contributing comments and questions to discussions;
- being engaged in the discussion;
- listening and responding respectfully and appropriately to your classmates;
- completing summaries, creating timelines, answering questions on Moodle, contributing to forum discussions,
etc., as assigned.
Absences from Seminar: If you miss a seminar, you are required to answer questions on our online Humanities Moodle site. You will have one week to complete your answers. We will give you instructions on how to access and use this site during the first and second weeks of school.
Late Work & Make-up Work: Good attendance is essential to your success in Humanities. Please be sure to follow the Pioneer extended absence policy if you know in advance that you will be missing a significant amount of school.
It is your responsibility to make up any work or tests missed due to excused absences within the allotted time for such make-ups. You will have as many days as you have consecutive excused absences plus one day in which to complete make-up work. Otherwise, late work will be marked down 5% per day.
Contact: You can contact me in person before and after lecture in the Little Theater (1st hour), before and after seminars in D207. I am often available during lunch and after school (by appointment).
My e-mail address is [email protected]
Office Hours: I will be available for drop-in office hours every Tuesday after 6th hour until 4:00 or 4:30. I hope you will stop in to talk about readings or lectures that confuse you, interest you (or bother you). It is also a good time to ask questions and discuss upcoming assignments.
Humanities History Grading Scale:
